Limericks
Today in school we copied note W27 into our notebooks. We then studied the form for writing a limerick. Limericks are 5 line poems. The 1st, 2nd and 5th lines rhyme and have three beats. The 3rd and 4th lines rhyme (a different rhyme than the one in lines 1,2 and 5) and have only two beats, thus they are shorter lines.
Rhyme and beat pattern is:
A ta-ta-tum ta-ta-tum ta-ta-tum
A ta-ta-tum ta-ta-tum ta-ta-tum
B ta-tum ta-tum
B ta-tum ta-tum
A ta-ta-tum ta-ta-tum ta-ta-tum
We wrote a practice limerick about a guy named Tim. The first line ends with "Tim," so lines 2 and 5 must rhyme with Tim. The shorter lines can be any rhyme the author wishes to use.
Homework: Write a limerick about pumpkins. We will be sending these to the FBPA limerick contest. Prizes will be awarded at the Pumpkin Festival on October 6th. There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.
Hint: Do not use "orange" or "pumpkin" at the end of the sentence.
