The Mystery of the Black Van

It was a cold December morning. Joe was walking to school about as fast as he could. The freezing air tickled the inside of his bright, red nose. Far up the street he could hear the sound of a loud motor running. "It sounds like a train," Joe said to himself as he kept walking at a brisk pace.
The noise got louder and louder. Joe stopped walking. He turned around to see what was making all the noise. Sure enough, it was the black van!
Joe dropped his books in the snow and began to run. "I have to get out of here!" he thought. He ran two blocks before he realized the van hadn't followed him. "What in the world is going on?" Joe wondered. He could still hear the loud motor of the van two blocks away.
"I better turn up the alley and try to lose them," he said to himself as he started to run again. The freezing air burned his throat as he ran as fast as he could down the alley. Finally, he stopped running and turned around. The black van was no where in sight. "Wow! That was close!" Joe thought.
He turned back around to head toward school when suddenly the van came zooming aound the corner! Joe's heart jumped into his throat. He told his legs to move, but he couldn't move them. He stood too afraid to move. The van stopped, and a man got out.
"Hey, kid," the man yelled. Joe was too scared to answer. He stood there as still as a snowman as the man walked right toward him. That's when he noticed that the man had something in his hand.
