Information you may find helpful

6th Grade English/Writing – Information for Parents and Guardians

All assignments in this class will correlate with PA standards for these 3 areas:

1.    Writing  - Students will do creative writing every day in class. Writings will vary in style and length depending on the topic.

2.    Speaking - Students will learn and practice public speaking skills by reading their stories utilizing a microphone and sound system.

3.    ListeningStudents will learn and practice good listening skills while they are in the audience as other students are speaking in front of the class.

·       Final grade will be determined by the total points earned in the above three areas. While grammatical concepts will be covered, there will be no formal tests on grammar or spelling. Instead, these skills will be assessed within each student’s writings. Creativity is always our primary goal.

·       You may see your child working on some of his or her longer stories from time to time at home, but there will never be any formal homework assignments (such as worksheets or exercises from a book).  Some writing will occur within your child’s English/Language Arts book, but these pages will never be assigned as homework.

·       When your child is absent, he or she may work at an individual pace to make up the writing that was missed that day in school. These assignments will be posted on the homework blog. Whenever your child completes the work, he or she will simply place it in a writing folder that is kept in the classroom.

Let’s have a wildly creative year in 6th Grade English Writing class!
